The EU Council adopted, on Thursday 20 July, a decision extending the framework for targeted restrictive measures related to the situation in Lebanon, which currently contains no entries, by one year, until 31 July 2024. This framework, adopted on 30 July 2021
(see EUROPE 12773/15), provides for the possibility of imposing sanctions against persons and entities responsible for undermining democracy or the Rule of law in Lebanon. Specifically, this could include individuals and entities that obstruct or undermine the democratic political process, hinder or undermine the implementation of plans to improve accountability and good governance in the public sector or the implementation of key economic reforms, or have engaged in serious financial misconduct involving public funds and the unauthorised export of capital.
