20/07/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 20 July, the Council of the European Union announced the appointment of two new European prosecutors to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office: Spain’s Ignacio de Lucas Martín and Portugal’s José António Lopes. They will take office on 29 July. These appointments are part of the process of partial renewal of the College of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), in accordance with the transitional rules established for the first mandate following the creation of this institution. To ensure that the renewal process is staggered, the European Prosecutors from a third of the Member States have been appointed by lot for a non-renewable three-year term. Prosecutors from Austria, Cyprus, Spain, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Portugal were appointed on 27 June, and a final prosecutor will be appointed at a later date. (NP)
