NGOs and industry organisations in heat pump sector are calling for greater political clarity regarding elimination of fossil-fuel boilers

Several industry organisations, NGOs and the European Heat Pump Association, which comprises 200 organisations in the sector, called, in a joint statement published on 12 July, on the EU and national governments to adopt a clear long-term policy for investment in the sector (€5 billion planned over three years), including significant restrictions on sales of fossil-fuelled gas boilers.

The heat pump market is registering record sales year on year, and has grown by 39% in 2022. However, growth still needs to accelerate if we are to achieve the European objective of decarbonising heating by 2050”, several industry organisations said in a press release.

They point out that this objective can only be achieved if there is a stable, long-term policy framework in favour of heat pumps, and also denounce the fact that too many current policies still favour fossil fuels in terms of subsidies and taxation.

The associations and the industry are therefore calling on the Member States to support the European Commission’s proposal, and to be open to negotiations on Ecodesign (see EUROPE 12923/16) in order to find a compromise that will enable the mass deployment of heat pumps and the gradual elimination of fossil fuel boilers.
