12/07/23 (Agence Europe) – Solidarity corridors to Ukraine and Moldova by rail require an extension of the standard gauge tracks specific to European railways, according to a study published on Monday 10 July by the European Commission and the European Investment Bank. For example, European track gauge on the lines to Lviv and Chiṣinău should be deployed as a first step towards improving connections between Poland and Ukraine, and between Romania and Moldova, as part of the ‘Connecting Europe Facility’ (see EUROPE 13207/6). The study also assesses how the new standard gauge lines in Ukraine and Moldova will fit in with the rest of the network in these countries, which will continue to use broad gauge. “We are setting the scene for long-term solutions”, commented Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean in a press release.
