04/07/2023 (Agence Europe) – Asked about the “missing billions” in the European budget, which Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán mentioned on Twitter at the European Council on 29 June, the European Commission spokesman was keen to take issue with his remarks on Tuesday 4 July. Cautioning on the use of the word “missing”, Eric Mamer pointed out that the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027 (see EUROPE 13201/1) was really about “the need for the EU to address the budgetary implications of the challenges that the European Union and its Member States are currently facing”. This revision calls for additional resources (€65.8 billion in total) from the Member States to finance aid to Ukraine, the challenges of migration and the modernisation of industry, as well as technical adjustments, such as the repayment of loans for Next Generation EU.
