European Parliament strongly condemns continuing violence between armed factions in defiance of humanitarian law

On Thursday 15 June, MEPs adopted a resolution on the humanitarian situation in Sudan by 477 votes to 3, with 43 abstentions. The resolution strongly condemned the continuing fighting between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces, violating international humanitarian law and ceasefires.

The Parliament particularly condemns the interruption of humanitarian aid, the recruitment of children and the deliberate targeting of civilians.

It urges all parties to cease all military activity immediately, to allow unrestricted humanitarian access and to resume talks on a negotiated peace agreement. It calls on the EU to stand ready to provide immediate support and humanitarian aid to the victims of the conflict.

The Parliament recommends that the EU and its Member States ensure that a permanent ceasefire agreement is followed by a process of democratic reform to establish the long-promised civilian government.

The resolution also calls on them to urgently consider targeted sanctions against those responsible for human rights violations under the EU’s global human rights sanctions regime.
