The Transition Pathway for the Textiles Ecosystem - a document setting out actions to accelerate the green and digital transformation of the textile industry and ensure its long-term sustainability, resilience and competitiveness - was published by the European Commission on Tuesday 6 June.
This dual transition pathway was created jointly by the Commission and the sector’s economic players, as set out in the EU’s revised industrial strategy, presented at the beginning of May 2021 (see EUROPE 12711/13). It is accompanied by a call for commitments from these players.
Among the fifty or so actions described are the promotion of circular and sustainable practices, services and business models, and support for SMEs to innovate, accelerate the dual transition and expand internationally.
Also included are training and retraining initiatives, i.e. promoting access to lifelong learning and training opportunities for skilled workers.
The document stresses the need to strengthen market surveillance for the textile ecosystem, but also to use trade policies to promote exports and ensure compliance with environmental and social standards.
The Commission is now inviting all interested parties to contribute to the implementation of the Transition Pathway by submitting the commitments they propose to support it, together with measurable objectives enabling the implementation and progress of the action to be assessed.
Similar transition pathways had already been published for tourism, the local and social economy, the chemical industry and the construction ecosystem.
