A number of players in biomethane value chain are calling for a binding target of 35 billion cubic metres of biomethane production per year in EU by 2030

A number of players in the biomethane value chain signed, on Tuesday 23 May, a joint letter calling on the Member States to include a binding production target of 35 billion cubic metres of biomethane per year by 2030 in the revision of the gas regulation (see EUROPE 13151/1).

Biomethane is a dispatchable and versatile energy source that can directly be used in existing gas infrastructure, appliances and equipment across sectors”, explain the signatories.

They consider that the production of 35 billion cubic metres of biomethane per year by 2030 will contribute to security of supply by replacing 20% of the natural gas imported from Russia before the war, and will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the buildings sector, industrial energy users and fuel suppliers.

In addition, the signatories stress that this target will support the competitiveness of energy-intensive industries, reduce the carbon intensity of maritime and road transport, space heating and agri-food systems in the short term, but will also contribute to the predictability and investor confidence needed to develop the biomethane value chain.

Finally, they indicate that this binding target can be adapted by Member States according to their structural characteristics.
