26/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 31 May, the European Commission is due to present its proposal for an interinstitutional agreement aimed at setting up a European ethics body by the end of 2023, according to a table showing the agendas for forthcoming meetings of the European College of Commissioners. This new body, promised by President Ursula von der Leyen as soon as she took office at the end of 2019, and made even more urgent by the scandal of corruption of MEPs by third countries, should be limited to setting common standards of ethics and integrity that would be applied by all participating EU institutions and bodies (see EUROPE 13187/26). In a resolution of September 2021, the European Parliament advocated granting the European body investigative powers and the authority to recommend sanctions in individual cases (see EUROPE 12792/9).
