EU to lead UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals

At the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) (New York, 10-19 July), dedicated to ‘Accelerating the recovery from Covid-19 and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels’, the EU intends to be a driving force to accelerate the pace and make this Forum a political communication platform to show what the EU, its Member States and its financial institutions are doing.

On Wednesday 24 May, the Member States’ ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) validated these political messages, which have already been detailed in this issue (see EUROPE 13156/18).

The Eurostat statistics published on the same day as the package on the ‘European Semester’ (see EUROPE 13187/22) - this budgetary exercise for coordinating socio-economic policies that incorporates the SDGs - provide an overview of the progress made in the EU towards achieving the SDGs.

In New York, the EU will be presenting a voluntary performance review report for the first time, as will nine EU Member States.

According to this Eurostat progress report, the EU has made good progress on most of the 17 SDGs over the period 2016-2020 or 2017-2022, with progress still to be made on SDG 13 ‘Climate action’, SDG 15 ‘Life on land’ and SDG 17 ‘Partnership for the goals’.
