25/05/23 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 25 May, the European Commission announced the mobilisation of €2.5 million in humanitarian aid to meet the most urgent needs of victims of Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar and Bangladesh, where further heavy rains are expected in the coming days. Rakhine State in Myanmar, which was hit hardest, is home to people already displaced by the conflict and whose temporary shelters have been largely destroyed. The Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh, which also suffered damage, is home to one million Rohingya refugees. The Commission says that previous humanitarian funding had enabled partner humanitarian organisations to anticipate the impact of Mocha by preparing shelter and food. The EU also provided detailed satellite maps of the damage through its Copernicus programme and deployed experts to carry out needs assessments. (AN)
