Several European economists and climate experts call for a European Energy Agency

Ten European economists and climate specialists have signed an opinion piece in the French newspaper Le Monde on Monday 8 May, calling for the creation of a public and independent European Energy Agency, similar to the European Environment Agency.

The problem is not so much that public authorities, companies, research institutes and associations do not provide data, but that they produce an incoherent patchwork of data points that are only partially documented, which they upload in their own formats and on their own platforms”, the column in Le Monde reads.

The piece highlights these “barriers” to meaningful discussion of energy policy measures, noting that many stakeholders are unable to take part in such discussions.

The authors of the column therefore call for the creation of a European Energy Agency, i.e. an infrastructure for publicly available information that will make it possible to centralise reliable and coherent data, representing “a foundation underpinning major policy choices relating to energy”, without which “Europe’s energy transition will be more difficult to achieve”.
