08/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will visit Kyiv on Tuesday 9 May. The visit aims to “reaffirm the EU’s unwavering support for Ukraine” and will be held in conjunction with Europe Day, her spokesperson said. Earlier on Monday, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, announced that his country would henceforth celebrate this European day. Ukraine thus renounces the commemoration of the victory over Nazi Germany on 9 May, in accordance with Russian tradition, and sides with the “free world” by celebrating the surrender on 8 May. “All the old evil that modern Russia is bringing back will be defeated just as Nazism was defeated”, Zelensky also said. For its part, the Commission has unveiled an eleventh package of sanctions against Russia (see other news). (HS with AFP)
