08/05/23 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Monday 8 May that it had authorised a €32 million (BGN 63 million) Bulgarian aid scheme to encourage the transfer of passenger and freight transport from road to rail, to remove technical obstacles to the cross-border interoperability of Bulgarian rail transport and to strengthen its competitiveness. In particular, this aid will support the integration of the European Train Control System (ETCS Level 2) into existing rolling stock in Bulgaria. ETCS is the signalling and control component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The aid will be distributed to railway undertakings until 30 April 2026 in the form of direct grants. Bulgaria will finance these measures with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) of the Next Generation EU Recovery Plan. (EV)
