30 MEPs protest against creation of an octopus farm in Spain

05/05/2023 (Agence Europe)Thirty MEPs sent a letter to the Government of the Canary Islands on Wednesday 3 May, expressing their concern about plans to open the first octopus farm in Spain. Allowing the construction of an octopus farm in Las Palmas (by the company Nueva Pescanova) could lead to an “ecological disaster” and a catastrophe for animal health, according to the authors of the letter, who include Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA, Portuguese), Caroline Roose (Greens/EFA, French) and Tilly Metz (Greens/EFA, Luxembourger). In particular, the MEPs denounce the methods of slaughter and feeding of these animals, which are considered intelligent, and the harmful environmental consequences. The world’s first octopus farming project also worries environmental and animal rights activists. (LC)
