Kosovo passes first step towards Council of Europe membership

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe announced, late on Monday 24 April, its decision to “transmit for opinion” to the Parliamentary Assembly, Kosovo’s application for membership of the Council of Europe.

This request was formally made in a letter to Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Organisation, dated 12 May 2022, 2 months after Russia was excluded from the Council of Europe in response to the outbreak of war in Ukraine.
