SECTORAL POLICIES / Energy

National Energy and Climate Plans are essential to reflect evolution of energy policy and address crisis, says Kadri Simson

At the conference on the future of the Energy Union, hosted by EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, experts, business leaders and politicians from the energy sector discussed the lessons learned from the energy crisis and the EU’s future energy policy.

The focus was on reflecting the increased need for energy security, the resilience of the EU energy system and the ambitious energy targets within the Union’s governance mechanism and the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP), which will be presented in June.

Member States are drafting their national plans today in a vastly different reality from 2019, when National Energy and Climate Plans were first submitted”, introduced Kadri Simson in the opening address of the conference.

In the past months we have achieved political agreements that foresee updated targets for both renewable energy and energy efficiency. The National plans should already reflect these changes”, she continued.

These plans, submitted by the Member States, will therefore have to be in line with the REPowerEU strategy in order to accelerate the clean transition of the economy, boost competitiveness, preserve security of energy supply and ensure security of investment for 2030 and beyond.
