11/04/23 (Agence Europe) – Five organisations, including the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, denounced the ongoing “impunity” 2 years after the murder of Greek journalist Giorgos Karaivaz. Murdered on 9 April 2021 in Athens, the reporter ran a website dedicated to criminal cases. Despite the promises of the authorities and the evidence to identify the perpetrators, the associations deplore that there has been “no significant progress in investigating or prosecuting this crime”. They call on Greece to “urgently bring to justice all those responsible for this abhorrent murder” and to provide “more transparency about the investigation”. “It’s high time for Europol to be called in to help”, said Sophie In 't Veld (Renew Europe, Dutch). “Impunity for murder will have a huge chilling effect on media freedom”, she added.
