06/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – In a letter sent to EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides on Thursday 6 April, 24 scientists have stated that the current review of EU animal welfare legislation “represents a unique opportunity to propose legislation for ending the breeding and killing of animals on fur farms”. Since there are no economically viable alternatives to the current cage-based housing system, a ban on fur farming is the only acceptable solution to ensure the welfare of these animals, say the scientists, who are supported by the NGO Eurogroup For Animals. Fur animals are included in EU legislation on animal welfare, but there are no species-specific provisions on welfare standards for animals bred for their fur. (LC)
