Encryption of private communications, EDRI concerned about EU-US cooperation

06/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – Digital freedoms group EDRi and 8 partners sent a letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Thursday 6 April, denouncing the “deliberate plans” of the US and the EU to attack end-to-end encryption. They refer to documents leaked by Statewatch on a meeting in March between European and American officials in which the “delegations jointly agreed on the need to promote law enforcement’s legitimacy to investigate encrypted communications”. “Beyond encryption, data retention and data processing were also identified as areas of focus by the US delegation”, the report notes.
