27/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 27 March, the European Commission sent a letter of formal notice to 20 Member States for failing to communicate to the Commission, by 12 January 2023, their measures transposing Directive (EU) 2020/2184 on the quality of water intended for human consumption into national law (see EUROPE 13098/28). The Drinking Water Directive updates a 1998 directive to improve the quality and safety of tap water. The countries who received the letter are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Sweden. In the absence of a satisfactory response, these countries will receive a reasoned opinion (the second stage of the infringement procedure). (AN)
