17/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – MEPs Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D, Spanish), chair of the Committee on Civil Liberties and permanent rapporteur for Poland, and Robert Biedroń (S&D, Polish), chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights, urged the EU to take concrete action on Friday 17 March, following the conviction of Justyna Wydrzyńska. Tried for supplying abortion pills in violation of Poland’s de facto abortion ban, the activist was sentenced on 15 March to eight months of community service. “The EU must act decisively to protect the rule of law and judicial independence in Poland”, said Juan Fernando López Aguilar. Meanwhile, Robert Biedroń, called for the “standardisation” of women’s rights across the EU out of “solidarity” with Polish women. Since 2022, the Parliament has been calling for the right to abortion to be enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. (NP)
