23/01/2023 (Agence Europe) – In response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Lake Chad Basin, the EU is mobilising €102.5 million in emergency aid for the vulnerable populations concerned, the European Commission announced on Monday 23 January at a high-level event on the region in Niamey, Niger. These funds will go to Nigeria (€34 million), Niger (€25 million), Chad (€26.5 million) and Cameroon (€17 million). They will enable humanitarian partners to provide life-saving assistance to displaced people and their host communities, address acute food and nutrition needs, provide access to education for displaced children and strengthen disaster preparedness. This amount is released from an envelope of €181.5 million earmarked this year for the Lake Chad Basin, Central African Republic and the Sahel. (AN)
