The European Commission presented the digital agreement signed between South Korea and the European Union (see EUROPE 13072/9) in November 2022 to members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy on Monday 23 January.
This partnership - the second after the one signed with Japan (a third will be signed next week with Singapore) - should first of all enable the development of cooperation between the two parties in the field of research.
In this respect, the focus will be on setting up a forum on semiconductors, on high-performance and quantum computing and on better involving the private sector. One part of the agreement also provides for greater sharing of data on cyber threats.
In addition to the Memorandum of Understanding between the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and the Korean authorities on cybersecurity, the EU and South Korea will work on 5G and 6G and their respective artificial intelligence systems, definitions and rules. Further work will also be carried out on the free flow of data and on regulatory convergence for digital platforms and markets. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
