17/01/2023 (Agence Europe) – Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment (ENVI), on Monday 16 January in the evening, largely approved agreements with the EU Council on the revision of two EU Regulations as part of the ‘Fit for 55 package’ of climate legislation. The first (62 votes in favour, 12 against and three abstentions) concerns the distribution of the climate effort among EU Member States in sectors not covered by the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) (effort sharing Regulation or ESR). The second (60 votes in favour, 10 against and six abstentions) is the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry Regulation (LULUCF). In order to enter into force, these agreements, concluded on 8 and 11 November 2022 respectively (see EUROPE 13060/6, 13062/15), still need to be approved by Parliament’s plenary session and then by the competent Ministers of the Member States.
