11/01/23 (Agence Europe) – The Social Democratic Group in the European Parliament has chosen Luxembourg Socialist Marc Angel as its candidate for the European Parliament Vice-Presidency, replacing Greek Socialist Eva Kaili, whose term of office was cut short due to her involvement in the alleged corruption scandal at the European institution (see EUROPE 13083/1). Mr Angel won in the third round of voting over Romanian Victor Negrescu, obtaining 69 votes against 37 for his competitor out of 111 voters (five blank votes). “Cooperation, transparency and building bridges are the driving forces of my candidacy”, he reacted via Twitter. Initially, eight candidates were in the running (see EUROPE 13096/24). It should be noted that Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield (Greens/EFA, French) has also applied for the vacant post of Parliament Vice-President, advocating “zero tolerance” in the fight against corruption.
