16/11/2022 (Agence Europe) – The Member States’ ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) approved, on Wednesday 16 November, the provisional political agreement reached on 27 October by the European Parliament and the EU Council on stricter CO2 emission performance standards for new cars and vans (see EUROPE 13053/1). As a reminder, the text sets CO2 emission reduction targets of 55% for new cars by 2030 and 50% for vans compared to 2021 levels. By 2035, this reduction target will be increased to 100%. However, there are several exemptions, including for manufacturers of limited series of vehicles, who will not have to meet the interim targets until the end of 2035. In 2026, the European Commission will have to assess the progress made and consider the need to revise - or not - the targets in the light of technological developments. (TM)
