EU and Member States to invest €130 million in ‘green’ partnership with Paraguay

In Asunción on Tuesday 15 November, the European Commission and Paraguay launched a ‘green partnership’ to promote green transition and climate action, the European Commission announced the same day.

The partnership will focus on three sectors: water and sanitation, sustainable production, and forest conservation/restoration.

This ‘Team Europe’ initiative (the EU, its Member States and its financial institutions) will be financed to the tune of €130 million, 55% of which will come from Germany and Spain, and €56 million from the EU budget.

The financing of this partnership, called ‘Green Paraguay’, will combine investments, guarantees, grants, technical assistance and twinning.

In particular, the EU intends to foster a strong partnership with Paraguayan civil society, local authorities, the private sector, universities and the media, with a particular focus on the role of young people, according to the Commission.

This initiative “will support the country to preserve and restore its forests, protect water supply and sanitation, and further promote circular economy”, commented the Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
