10/11/2022 (Agence Europe) – MEPs adopted the European Parliament/EU Council agreement on unfair foreign subsidies by 598 votes to 5 with 9 abstentions. Negotiators reached an agreement on the last day of the French Presidency of the EU Council on 30 June (see EUROPE 12984/1). The proposed regulation, presented by the European Commission in 2021 (see EUROPE 12713/1), aims to monitor and sanction foreign subsidies that distort competition within the EU. “With this vote we move one step closer to finally ending the free-for-all that has been pitting European companies, subject to stringent subsidy control, against foreign competitors with unfettered access to foreign largesse”, said the text’s rapporteur in the European Parliament, Christophe Hansen (EPP, Luxembourgish). The Council should, in turn, adopt the text on 28 November so that it can enter into force. (LM)
