Faced with soaring energy prices and inflation, almost half (48%) of EU citizens say they are worried about paying their bills in the next 6 months. 71% say they have changed their habits to save energy at home, and 28.4% have changed their transport habits, according to the results of a Eurobarometer survey published by the European Commission on Monday 7 November.
The survey was conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the Commission between 11 and 24 October in each of the 27 EU Member States among a representative sample of 25,676 people aged 18 and over.
When it comes to paying bills, 20.3% of respondents are extremely concerned (especially in Greece: 35.3%, in Spain: 29.2% and in Malta: 28.1%), 27.6% are somewhat concerned, 25.4% are not so concerned and 25.7% are not at all concerned, especially in Denmark and Austria. The number of people who are very concerned is lowest in Sweden and Finland (3.3% in each of these two countries).
36.8% say they have touched their savings in the last 6 months to cope with inflation - the highest number of citizens responding in the affirmative being in Malta (55%), Cyprus (49.4%) and Italy (48%).
