29/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 29 September the European Commission decided to refer Latvia to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to fully transpose the revised directive (2013/59) limiting exposure to ionising radiation into national law (see EUROPE 10979/24). Member States were required to transpose the directive by February 2018. In the course of the infringement procedure, which started in July 2020, the Latvian authorities gave notification of a number of provisions of the directive. However, they have not yet transposed the obligation to establish management strategies for contaminated areas or adopted an action plan addressing the long-term risks of radon exposure, as required by the directive.
