14/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Media Freedom Act, which was eagerly awaited by the media industry, was the major omission from the State of the Union speech delivered by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to MEPs in Strasbourg on Wednesday 14 September. Thus, although the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) welcomed the mention of the “brave fight of Russian journalists and the efforts of journalists against disinformation”, it deplores this omission and reminds the Commission President of her promise to propose a “landmark initiative to safeguard pluralism and independence of the media in the EU internal market”. The presentation of the media freedom legislation by the Commission is expected by the end of the week. (Original version in French by Hélène Seynaeve)
