14/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – In her Letter of Intent on the State of the Union, published on Wednesday 14 September, Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that “we will put forward a mid-term review of the long-term budget in the year ahead”. The mid-term review of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2021-2027, called for by MEPs (see EUROPE 13020/7), is necessary, in particular, because of higher than expected inflation, which is increasing pressure on the EU budget. Above all, the budgetary effects of the war in Ukraine and the Covid-19 pandemic have reshuffled the deck. “We must continue to use the power of the EU budget to ensure it best supports people and the economy. Looking ahead, we must also assess how Covid-19, the war and their spill-over effects is affecting our long-term budget”, the State of the Union Address said.
