14/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – In her State of the Union address on Wednesday 14 September, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the proposal for a mental health initiative in 2024. The President wants “appropriate, accessible and affordable support” for people with mental health problems. Commissioner for Youth Mariya Gabriel added that young people’s mental health was a priority and that her teams were ready to act. The announcement comes a day after the European Parliament voted on an own-initiative report by Hannes Heide (S&D, Austrian) on the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic for children. The report calls on Member States and the Commission to better detect, assess and address mental health problems among young people and children.
