145 MEPs call on Serbian President to reverse EuroPride cancellation

In a letter dated Wednesday 31 August, 145 MEPs from five political groups (Renew Europe, S&D, Greens/EFA, The Left and EPP) and 24 nationalities asked Serbian President Aleksandar Vucicto to reverse his decision to cancel EuroPride, which was due to take place in mid-September in Belgrade.

In the letter, signed by MEPs including the members of the European Parliament LGBTI Intergroup Bureau, six Parliament Vice-Presidents and six political group Chairs or Co-Chairs, they call on the Serbian leadership to allow EuroPride to take place as planned and to commit to deploying sufficient law enforcement forces “to ensure its safety, thereby ensuring that all attendees can safely exercise their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly”. They also called for continued dialogue with the EU Delegation and the organisers in order to find a solution to hold the event safely.

In a statement dated 28 August, the EU Delegation in Serbia regretted the Serbian announcement to cancel or postpone EuroPride and asked for clarification.

Despite the Serbian President’s decision, the EuroPride organisers have decided to continue with the event and MEPs are expected to attend.
