WHO and ECDC publish first in series of recommendations to control monkeypox

On Tuesday 30 August, the World Health Organization’s European office (WHO Europe) published the first in a series of policy briefs developed with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to support the strategies of states in the European region to control monkeypox.

Commenting on the document entitled ‘Considerations for the control and elimination of monkeypox in the WHO European Region’, ECDC Director Andrea Ammon discusses the different steps that need to be taken simultaneously to control monkeypox infection in Europe. ECDC calls for multi-sectoral collaborations.

Public health and clinical authorities at national and local levels are encouraged to work with civil society organisations, community-based organisations and at-risk audiences to promote the optimal flow of information on protection against monkeypox transmission.

In addition, the document recommends that states in the European region integrate research on transmission patterns, disease surveillance and vaccination campaigns into their response strategy to monkeypox.
