On Monday 25 July, the European Commission opened a public consultation on the development of a future framework for the harmonised measurement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transport and logistics sector across the EU.
The consultation will help to inform the debate and guide the work as the Commission has already identified several major problems, starting with the lack of information available to businesses, customers and passengers, making it difficult for them to compare different transport options in terms of their respective GHG emissions.
In addition, the Commission’s call for evidence highlights that work will need to be done on the remaining discrepancies in the results of emissions data calculations within the EU, due to the lack of a common framework for all Member States.
Finally, the Commission points to the “still limited” use of GHG accounting by companies, especially SMEs, and attributes this to “the difficulty of choosing an appropriate methodology”, a potential lack of awareness, a lack of interest in certain environmental issues, a reluctance to publish certain data or “the perceived administrative burden associated with calculating GHG”.
The public consultation will remain open until 17 October.
