Commission launched 847 new infringement procedures in 2021

On Friday 15 July, the European Commission published statistics on its infringement procedures against Member States and the UK for 2021.

As a result, the Commission launched 847 new procedures. Belgium and Greece were the countries most affected, with 42 new procedures each, followed by Cyprus with 41. Apart from the UK (one), Denmark and Ireland are the best performers, with 18 and 20 procedures respectively.

The procedures concern first and foremost financial stability, financial services and the capital markets union (167), followed by justice and consumers (120), and mobility and transport (112). In addition, 89 procedures concerned migration and home affairs, 89 communication networks, content and technology, 56 energy, 52 environment, 48 employment, social affairs and inclusion, 28 internal market, industry, entrepreneurship and SMEs, 25 taxation and customs, 12 agriculture and rural development, and 11 maritime affairs and fisheries.

The number of new infringement procedures related to late transposition of Directives decreased from 599 in 2020 to 571 in 2021, while the number of Directives for which the transposition deadline was exceeded in 2021 was higher than in 2020 (55 versus 47). At the end of 2021, 872 infringement procedures for late transposition were still pending, regardless of the year in which the procedures were opened, an increase of 21% compared to the 719 procedures pending at the end of 2020.

As of 31 December, Spain had the highest number of procedures opened (105) ahead of Italy and Greece (both 102).
