13/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 12 July, the Council of the European Union adopted a decision approving the accession of the EU to the Convention on the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in civil and commercial matters. This text, concluded on 2 July 2019, allows the enforcement of judgments in favour of EU companies or citizens by an EU General Court in non-EU countries and territories, and vice versa in case the foreign judgments comply with EU law. This accession should reduce the risks and costs of cross-border litigation, according to the Council. The Parliament had given its consent to EU membership in June (see EUROPE 12978/12).
