Brussels, 17/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – The EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, expressed his concerns about the latest developments in Libya on the morning of Tuesday 17 May. Early in the morning, Tripoli was shaken by clashes after the announcement of the entry into the capital of the government supported by Marshal Haftar. There was no immediate reaction from the government in Tripoli, but clashes between armed groups broke out. “Instead of having an election to have one government, they do not have elections and they have two governments. Sooner or later, when there are two governments, they clash”, Mr Borrell said, adding that such clashes were to be expected. “Libya was in a relatively calm situation for some months. Now the war has started again”, he regretted, adding that he was closely following the situation which he said was “very worrying”. The Haftar-backed government has since withdrawn from Tripoli. (CG)
