MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade (INTA), on Monday 16 May, approved a report by Sandra Kalniete (EPP, Latvia) on the provisional suspension of tariffs on imports from Ukraine. This is a proposal presented by the European Commission on 27 April (see EUROPE 12940/3) and quickly adopted by MEPs. Parliament is due to vote on the text in plenary on 19 May.
Once adopted, the Regulation will suspend all tariffs and tariff quotas on imports from Ukraine to the EU for one year.
MEPs did not make any substantive changes to the text. They added in the recitals the possibility, which they consider “appropriate”, to speed up the procedure and not to wait for the 8 weeks of consultation of national parliaments, as has been the case for several other Regulations adopted since the beginning of the war.
“We are committed to helping Ukraine maintain its trade position with the rest of the world. When we say that Ukraine is not alone in its struggle - we mean it”, said the rapporteur on this text, Sandra Kalniete.
