11/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – The High Representative of the Union, Josep Borrell, strongly condemned on Wednesday 11 May the murder of Al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh during an Israeli army operation in Jenin (northern West Bank). Another journalist, Ali Al Samoud, was injured. “It is essential that a thorough, independent investigation clarifies all the circumstances of these incidents as soon as possible and that those responsible are brought to justice”, warned Mr Borrell. According to witnesses, the army opened fire on the journalists, who were wearing ‘Press’ waistcoats. According to the army, the shots could have come from Palestinians. The High Representative recalled that “it is unacceptable to target journalists while they perform their job”. “Journalists covering conflict situations must be ensured safety and protection at all times”, he added.
