Fight against imported deforestation, Greenpeace conducts wildcat operation at port of Amsterdam

11/05/2022 (Agence Europe)Calling on the EU to adopt strong regulations on the fight against imported deforestation, more than 60 activists from 15 European countries volunteering for Greenpeace Netherlands blocked a giant ship arriving in the port of Amsterdam with 60 million kilos of soybeans from Brazil, the NGO announced on 11 May. “The companies trading the soy in this ship give no assurances to the farms buying it and the people eating the meat fed with it that it's not linked to destroyed ecosystems”, comments Sini Eräjää, Greenpeace’s campaigner on agriculture and forests. The operation was carried out in the hope that the EU Environment Council on 28 June would strengthen the proposed EU regulation of October 2021 currently under discussion (see EUROPE 12937/10, 12913/14).
