Marija Pejčinović Burić announces cooperation with Ukraine to investigate human rights violations

Returning from a working visit to Kyiv, Borodyanka and Irpin in Ukraine, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, issued a statement on Tuesday 10 May reiterating the organisation’s support for the President, Volodymyr Zelensky, and the Ukrainian people. This support will include advice to Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova and her office in their investigations of “gross human rights violations” and in their cooperation with the International Criminal Court.

During her stay, Ms Pejčinović Burić met with President Zelensky, Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, First Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova and members of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

She also met with representatives of the military and civil society, including the leaders of the Majlis, the assembly of the Crimean-Tatar people.

The preparation of “a package of measures to be implemented after the aggression has ended” was also announced by the Secretary General, who once again called for “an immediate end to the hostilities”.
