18/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – Foratom, an association representing the nuclear industry in Europe, is calling for the maintenance of all current nuclear power plants in operation, where possible, and support for the development of new nuclear reactors in those Member States that wish to use this technology, in a letter sent on Wednesday 9 March to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and to the French President, Emmanuel Macron. The letter points out that nuclear power has the advantage of stable production costs, “thanks to low operating costs and the low impact of potential variations in the price of uranium”, as well as being a low-carbon energy source that is not weather dependent. Furthermore, although most of the uranium needed for the EU’s nuclear fleet is imported, Foratom believes that the diversity of suppliers offers sufficient alternatives in case of unavailability of a supplier.
