18/03/22 (Agence Europe) – Faced with the emerging global energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the International Energy Agency (IEA) presented, on Friday 18 March, a new 10-point plan to reduce oil consumption, following a first plan, unveiled on 3 March, to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian gas (see EUROPE 12903/4). It recommends, among other things, reducing speed limits on motorways by at least 10 km/h, making public transport cheaper, preferring trains to planes if possible, promoting teleworking, and introducing car-free Sundays in major cities. According to the IEA, the implementation of these 10 measures by advanced economies would reduce oil consumption by 2.7 million barrels per day in four months, a level equivalent to the consumption of all cars in China.
