The president of the Eurogroup, Paschal Donohoe, described on Friday 25 February as a “very important achievement” the new early repayment that the Greek authorities will make on loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the ‘Greek Loan Facility’.
This early repayment, which will be effective at the end of 2022, relates to loans for which the principal must be repaid before the end of 2023.
In a communiqué, the Eurogroup welcomes the positive evolution of the Greek economy, in particular the reforms adopted despite a macroeconomic environment disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, while underlining the importance of continuing the reforms in the framework of the European ‘Next Generation EU’ Recovery Plan. It notes that the early repayment of the loans will have a positive impact on Greek public finances.
On Tuesday 22 February, Athens’ public creditors implemented a sixth Greek public debt relief of €767 million (see EUROPE 12896/29).
