04/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 4 February, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service denounced the decision by the Russian authorities to ban the German public service broadcaster Deutsche Welle from broadcasting in Russia, revoke the accreditation of its employees, suggest to consider designating it as a ‘foreign agent’ and close its office in Moscow. “This is unacceptable and lacks any justification”, he said in a statement, explaining that the German regulator’s decision to ban Russian public broadcaster RT from operating in the country due to the lack of a valid licence had “no connection” with DW’s work in Russia. Stressing the EU’s solidarity with DW and its staff in Russia, the spokesperson hoped that the media would have full and fair access to legal steps “in order to challenge this unjustified decision ”.
