21/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – The EU and the United States have sent a letter to the World Trade Organization (WTO) informing it that their dispute on steel and aluminium tariffs is over. They are thus calling for the formal dispute at the WTO to be suspended. On 31 October, both sides had announced that they had reached an agreement so as to prevent this conflict—known as a ‘section 232’—from escalating (see EUROPE 12824/4). Washington had granted the EU a tariff quota for steel and aluminium imports that is based on historical import volumes, and the EU had lifted the tariffs imposed on certain American products in response to the Section 232 tariffs.
