Government deficit at 4.0% and government debt at 97.7% in euro area in third quarter of 2021

In the third quarter of 2021, the seasonally-adjusted government deficit-to-GDP ratio stood at 4.0% in the euro area and 3.7% in the EU, according to data released by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) on Friday 21 January.

Significant decreases in deficits compared to the second quarter of 2021 were observed, but the deficits remained at a high level compared to the pre-pandemic period, Eurostat notes.
